The ascent first follows the ski slope to the top station of the drag lift “Schwarzmoos” below the Pirchkogel. If you prefer a more comfortable ride, take the Hochalter chairlift to the top station and then cross west to the T-bar lift, or to the limnological research station of the University of Innsbruck, where the ascent begins. The steeper eastern slope above the ski area leads to the summit. The ascent is easy to recognize and offers no orientation problems. While the view to the south becomes more and more impressive during the ascent, the deep view of the Mieminger Plateau, the Wettersteingebirge and the Inn Valley is surprising once you reach the summit.
The descent leads along the ascent route back to Kühtai.
Other tour variants are, for example, the Vorderer Grießkogel at 2,666 m, or the Grießkogelscharte at 2,586 m.
